What are the best shoes to wear when going canoeing?

I was thinking maybe some Columbia sandals? Do you know what the best kind to get and where?. i’m going canoeing this weekend and i need the right shoes.
Good old fashioned deck shoes ( like a pair of womens keds). Canvas slip ons with a real light textured sole that grips like you wouldn’t believe. They have been around like a thousand years and still are the best for grip, cut protection, and for NOT jamming your little or big toe. Trust me…..deck shoes are the way to go, and jamming your toes can make a good weekend bad….real fast. For women, if I could make a brand recommendation, skechers women’s shoes work real well.

Sea-kayaking tours or kayak expeditions in Croatia?

Who offers kayaking tours of Croatia, around Dubrovnik? Not interested in sit-on-top kayaks and mass tourism. Looking for 5 to 7 days.

Try Lifejacket Adventures.

http://blog.lifejacketadventures.com
They offer 2 original tours – the first is based around Vis and Hvar Islands; the second starts in Korcula, the home of Marco Polo, and finishes in Dubrovnik. Their hook is that these expeditions are supported by beautiful small traditional Dalmatian fishing boats. They teach guests alot about the region’s food and wine – and even teach you old fishermen’s skills. Their tours are an immersion in the local maritime culture.

How to work out for paddling in surfing?

How do I train my shoulders for the specific motion of paddling out and into waves? I know general shoulder exercises, however I can do them all winter and feel completely unprepared come spring. Without out paying for one of those machines, does anyone know advanced techniques?

Thanks

a good one is to go out on flat days and sit on your knees, keeping yourself balanced on the center of your board. then paddle with long strides going along the coast. your shoulders and triceps will kill

what is leverage and how is it used in golf and kayaking?

It is when you use something long and either use allot of force to move the other side far or move something far to move the other side with allot of force.

Is a pedal kayak faster than a paddle kayak?

Which is stronger, your legs or arms? The paddle ones are less stable.

What is a great camera to take on an outdoor hiking and canoeing trip?

There are lots to be honest. The Pentax Optio series are rugged. They are waterproof and dustproof. Perfect for hiking and canoeing.

Anything by Canon is good. The picture quality is great. You can get their ultracompacts Ixus line with Image Stabilization. However, you have to purchase a separate accessory for underwater shooting. The Canon Ixus 850 IS has wideangle lenses, which is perfect to capture that scenery atop a mountain.

Float Trips in Northern/northeastern Oklahoma?

I’m looking to go on a float trip in Oklahoma this summer. We always go to southern Missouri, up the Niangua, but we thought we’d try something newer (and closer to Kansas) this year. Anyone know of any good spots?

I’m looking for a campground that allows tent camping, outdoor fires, and alcohol to be consumed. Also, I’d like the float trip to be around 6-9 miles, in canoes, with alcohol also allowed.

Price would need to be around $5-15 per person, per night, with the canoe rental being around $25-35 per day.

If you ever have floated up the Niangua River near Bennett Springs, MO through one of the outfitters there, like Red Beard, Ho-Humm, NRO, etc., you’ll know what I’m looking for. I want the exact same thing, only in Oklahoma.

I’ve not been on the trips you have…most people in Oklahoma float the Illinois near Tahlequah. Here is a link to some of the resorts http://www.shopoklahoma.com/illinoir.htm

I’ve gone with War Eagle, Eagle Bluff and Arrowhead. Honestly, I can’t remember one being any better than the others it’s all the same trip with all the same services. You can camp and have fires, everything you requested.

The floating is just a huge party. You’ll see families but there is a lot of alcohol on that river. Everybody interacts with one another if you are there on the weekend or any busy time. Water guns and various toys help in this interaction. You can pull off all along the way and have lunch, swim, you’ll see rope swings and other additions to the lake that people have created for added enjoyment.

I grew up in Tulsa and it was a past time we looked forward to every summer. For the most part it is relaxing and not treacherous although the river can get rough usually near the beginning of the season. The resorts will let you know how it is before you go out.

That link will also show you other places in Oklahoma, I’m just not familiar with them.

What kind of Old Town canoe should I buy?

I know I want to buy an Old Town canoe however, picking the type I want is a bit more difficult. I want a canoe that is versatile. I want to be able to use it solo or tandem and be able to canoe easily through calm lakes as well as have some fun with some simple rapids. I would also love it to have stability in the water.

Is it safe to take a kayak out to sea around Southend way?

Thank You

(Southend in Essex, England)

depending on your ability, the weather and sea conditions it can, or cannot, be safe to take a Kayak to see.

people have taken kayaks around the UK, around Cape Horn and Tierra Del Fuego. so it can be done.

the real questions I suppose are
what is your level of comeptance and confidence
how strong are the tides or other currents
how long a journey you are planning
how far off the coast are you planning on going

There is nothing I’m aware of that is especailly problematical about the Thames Estuary and its approaches. there’s a fair bit of commercial traffic in the channels but they are a ways off Southend. the water qulaity is OK.. its not especially hazardous, although I wouldn’t want to swallow it.

ultimately its up to you

How is "having a witness present" during a paddling protecting the child ?

Don’t teachers and principals protect each other anyway? If one goes too far, I’m sure the "witness" isn’t going to tell on the paddler, is he?

No, adults won’t protect each other. A witness does protect the student, just like having a person in a classroom observering the teacher protect the student… it makes the paddler more conscious of what exactly they’re doing.
