Solo Canoe Trip 2009 (3 of 3)
This is part 3 of a 3 part video taken on a solo trip I did with my dog Maddy (aka The Goose) to the Algonquin region in Ontario Canada. We did a there-and-back starting at Wendigo Lake and moving South to Clam Shell Lake.
The weather was better than I could have hoped for with lakes of glass for almost the whole trip.
It was a nice relaxing trip and a great way to end the season.

Yeah, I was looking …
Yeah, I was looking at one like that at Futureshop here in Toronto and it looked pretty cool, so I’d like to see your review. It looks like it has a little over 11 hours of memory @ TV-HR, but only 70 minutes battery. That’s a bit of a drag. More batteries I guess. I’m going to try to piece together a vid of this year’s trout trip in the Park. Should be fun. I have a Canon A640 10mp that takes ok video. An waterproof HD cam would definitely be awesome.
Look forward to your next post.
The camera I use …
The camera I use surprises a lot of people. It’s just a little Canon SD1100 point-and-shoot. I will be looking at upgrading this season to a Sanyo Xacti waterproof HD cam though. My main criteria for a camera is it be small and easy to get out and put away, I like to keep it in my pocket. If it’s too hard to prep for use then chances are I just won’t take as much video. I’d rather have lots of video to choose from that isn’t the best quality than have very good quality but not as many shots.
It’s snowing out …
It’s snowing out right now, and I’m whatching this vid. I’m there now, not here! Can’t wait for paddling season!

The white stuff you found looks like the pollen from a popular tree.We have several popular trees in our back yard and in the spring they release so much of this it looks like it has snowed 2 inches. Love your videos and keep up the good work.

I applaude you …
I applaude you monsieur! Your vids get better with each release!! Great tripping tips and techniques revealed to us in Troy-Vision and Maddy-Colour. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you demoing even the simplest of tasks such as when you filmed getting out of the canoe and picking it up. It’s a real education tool for me and anyone else as green to tripping as I am. I go on my first portage next spring. woo hoo! And with more confidence with every video you release! You ROCK dude!!
Oh my god, I’m so …
Oh my god, I’m so in love with that darling doggie. The tent piece was so sweet!
Thanks again, I’ll …
Thanks again, I’ll try that fire starter rope technique the next time I come across some fireweed.
The fireweed name …
The fireweed name came from the fact that after a fire this plant grows quickly in the burnt areas.
I usually twine it together to make a kind of rope. It burns very white and hot which when made into a ring makes a good slow burning fire starter.
Enjoy.
another great video …
another great video, looking forward to the next.
Thanks! I knew …
Thanks! I knew someone out there would set me straight. I checked out “fireweed” on wikipedia and the first image in the gallery is exactly what it looked like.
They don’t call it FIREweed for nothing, that stuff is the best tinder I’ve found yet and the least amount of work to prep it.
The white fluff you …
The white fluff you used to start the fire looks like fireweed pollen.
It’s too stringy for cattail fluff.
great trip again …
great trip again thanks for sharing as always my friend.

Hey Troy!
I’ve really enjoyed your canoe-camping vids over the last year. As an avid paddler from T.O., Algonquin has also been my destination of choice for the last 3 decades.
I was pleased to finally see someone else using the bow-line trick during portaging.
One question.. What type of camera are you using to take your vids?
Keep up the great work.
