Do sit on top kayak seats make a more comfortable ride and help paddling?
I have recently bought a tandem sit on top kayak and the seats are not so comfortable, does anyone have experience of the seats you can buy? Are they good?
There are some good backrests out there, and they do help.
Surfing Wetsuits 101 – How to Pick the Best Wetsuits for Surfing
Winter is a fact of life for many people who enjoy the sport of surfing. However, cold air and water temperatures don’t have to stop your sessions! Enter the wetsuit, probably the single biggest invention in surfing since the surfboard itself.
Wetsuits are tight fitting bodysuits made of flexible neoprene rubber. They work by trapping a thin layer of water between the neoprene and the skin. The body heats up this water, thus keeping the surfer warm.
When picking out a suit, you’re going to want to get one that is specifically designed for surfing. That means seeking out your local surf shop. Don’t go to a dive shop or swimming store. Surfing wetsuits are specially made to endure the specific repetitive motions that surfers make when they’re out in the ocean. For example, non-surfing suits can have seams in bad places that will cause major rashes when you’ve been paddling for a few hours.
Wetsuits come in different cuts, from short-sleeve spring suits (or shorties) to fullsuits with hoods. When it gets very cold, booties and gloves are also available. Caps and hoods are also available for suits that don’t have them already attached.
Surfers often have a quiver of wetsuits to accompany their quiver of different boards, especially in areas where the seasons change dramatically.
There are a variety of thicknesses from which to choose. From thin 2 mm spring suits, to 2/3 mm fullsuits, 4/3’s, 5/4/3’s, and 6/5/4’s. These numbers reference how thick the neoprene is in millimeters for different areas of the suit. Often the thickest neoprene will be in the torso and thighs, while the thinner areas will be on the arms and calves.
When getting a wetsuit, it’s important to set aside a block of time in order to try them on. Each company uses different models and they all have a slightly different fit.
The fit should be snug. Don’t buy them too loose or water will be able to freely enter the suit and the insulating effect will be lost. This means you shouldn’t buy a kid’s suit a few sizes too big so they can grow into it. They might as well not wear a suit at all. The neck is an important area to pay attention to. The collar should be snug so that water doesn’t freely enter and exit.
When looking at the pricetag, you do tend to get what you pay for. There are several different makes and models from each company, from budget to luxury. Often the higher priced wetsuits will have all sorts of cool things like sealed seams and improved zippers and entry/exit schemes.

I have recently bought a tandem sit on top kayak and the seats are not so comfortable, does anyone have experience of the seats you can buy? Are they good?
Hello Duncan. I use detachable seats in my inflatables. These clip in at the front and back and have a semi rigid back. I find that this added support improves comfort a great deal. It also aids paddling as it gives you more support to pull against.
I hope this helps and you manage to get something to help you enjoy this fantastic sport.

Trout Fishing On The Bay!
Wading in the flats and fishing in St. George Sound was as soothing and relaxing an outing as I’ve had in years. Getting out of bed early, my brother in law and I left the rest of our vacationing family and drove the mile to St. George Island State Park, Florida. We’d scouted the area the day before and found that the boat landing area at the park wasn’t deep enough to safely launch the boat. The island was still digging out of the sand due to Hurricane Dennis.
Since we couldn’t put the boat in the water there, we just pulled the truck, boat and trailer into a nice shady spot close to the water and decided to wade. It was a beautiful morning for wading and we almost had the whole bay to ourselves at 8:00 in the morning. There was only one kayaker paddling around about a half mile from us.
The gentle lapping of the water around my knees, the picturesque morning sun and the mist on the water made this morning a magnificent one. We slowly eased around the oyster bars that seem to exist throughout the bay. About a half mile away I could see a boat cautiously moving through the open water of the bay, careful not to run aground because the water could change from 4 feet deep to 0 in a flash!
Before I left the shore I had stocked my fishing vest with a couple of spoons, a gold one and a silver one. That was the only tackle I had with me. When wading I carry a mesh nylon bag to carry my fish if I’m going to eat them later. I also put my Florida non-resident fishing license in a zip lock bag and stuffed it in one of the many pockets of my vest.
Tying on my gold spoon, I cast into the shore side weeds. I hadn’t retrieved it more that a few feet when something grabbed it and headed for the other side of the bay. After a few wild forays up and down the channel between the two oyster beds where I was standing in waist deep water, I brought the fish up to me. It was a beautiful trout about two pounds. I continued wading and casting down the shore line and eventually worked my way further out into the bay. During this time I caught one more trout and nothing else.
Tiring of not seeing another fish, I changed to my silver lure. Within a couple of casts I had a good sized fish on the end of my fishing line. This time it felt like I had hooked a concrete block. I brought him to the top of the water. When I measured him on the inch marks I had painted on my rod, he proved to be 22 ” long; well within the 18-27 inch size regulations for a Red Fish. I put him in my mesh bag that was tied to my fishing vest and let him swim around with the two trout.
My silver spoon seemed to be the bait of the day for within 10 minutes I had another fish on the line. As I brought him closer to me I saw that it was another Redfish; a little larger than the first one. Since I had already caught my limited of Reds for the day, I released the one in the bag and replaced him with the larger one I had just caught.
Every fisherman who has ever caught a good sized fish looks around to see if anyone else had witnessed his great achievement. I scanned the area around me and saw there were two other fishermen now standing on a sand bar about two hundred yards from me. There was also the kayaker I had seen earlier, closer to me now, paddling around the oyster bars enjoying the morning. My brother-in-law seemed to be didn’t seem to be having much success for he merely shook his head in disgust as I held up the beauty I had just caught.
As I was about to cast again, I saw the Kayaker getting close to me. I was about to become irritated about someone invading my fishing space when the girl who was paddling the boat yelled, “Are you Bob Alexander?”
Now this was spooky! Out in the middle of Apalachicola Bay, almost 500 miles from home and someone is looking for me? She certainly didn’t look like a bill collector or the IRS. For a moment I thought I must be in the middle of a Twilight Zone episode.
As the girl paddled closer, she proved to be a mermaid with a gift! As I waved my hand in acknowledgement, she held up the zip lock baggie that I used to carry and protect my fishing license. It must have fallen out of my pocket and drifted on the wind to where the lady kayaker was floating.
Not only did we have a great morning of fishing, but I had also experienced a miracle. You can’t ask for much more from a sunny morning in June.

Stand Up Paddle Board Fishing
Paddling along the shallows you can see the shadow of the board gliding across the sandy lake bottom. It’s not uncommon to see a fish cruising along close to you… so why not seize the moment and cast a line out.
I’ve found that the stand up paddle board can be an excellent fishing platform. Where I live, we have hundreds of inland lakes around that are great for exploring and fishing. Some of the great fishing spots aren’t even accessible from a boat, but with a paddleboard you can scoot right up on a fishing hole without even being noticed. With the high vantage point of stand up paddle boards, you can see the fish about as far away as you can cast. It’s nearly a perfect situation.
Here is my typical paddleboard fishing excursion. For this example let’s assume we’re fishing for Bass. First I’d scope out the satellite layout of the lake on Google Maps. You’d be surprised how many times features of the lake will go un-noticed. Look for dark spots that resemble “holes”, or spots that look like steep drop offs around the edge of the lake. You’ll also want to take into consideration the time of day that you’re planning on fishing. Early morning and late evening are the best times to catch the fish.
When getting ready to go out on the lake, grab a backpack that has an external side pocket for drinks -most do have these. Test fit your fishing pole in this little pouch… You might need to make some small modifications to get it to stay in while paddling. Then put your lures, tackle, and anything else you plan to fish with in the bag.
When you get to the lake, scope out the wind direction. The wind tends to blow the warm top water to one side of the lake… in my experiences; the fish tend to stay in the cooler water. So paddle out to a spot that looks like it might have some fish. Weed beds or underwater debris can be a good place to start.
Reach behind your head and grab the fishing pole. Get yourself steady, and cast. You may have to repeat that process a few times, but with a little skill and a lot of luck, you’ll hook a fish.
This is the fun part… the fish will start pulling back. Sometimes, if you’ve got a decent fish on the end of the line, he’ll actually pull you around a little bit. -Really fun.
Good luck… and keep paddling!
