What are the best shoes to wear when going canoeing?

I was thinking maybe some Columbia sandals? Do you know what the best kind to get and where?. i’m going canoeing this weekend and i need the right shoes.
Good old fashioned deck shoes ( like a pair of womens keds). Canvas slip ons with a real light textured sole that grips like you wouldn’t believe. They have been around like a thousand years and still are the best for grip, cut protection, and for NOT jamming your little or big toe. Trust me…..deck shoes are the way to go, and jamming your toes can make a good weekend bad….real fast. For women, if I could make a brand recommendation, skechers women’s shoes work real well.

Small motor boat. If I keep it on a trailer at home. How and where do you launch it onto the sea? Kayak?

I am considering buying a motor boat from Ebay, just for myself.
If I keep it at home I can drive it down to the solent. But where can I launch it?
Also is it possible to launch it on your own, or do you need two or more people to do that?

Alternatively I could perhaps keep it on the water all the time. But would it have to be taken out for maintenance every year? What a palava.
Could I lease a share in a boat instead? Could my friend use it as well, at different times?
I am looking to go around the solent.

FYI I have a kayak at the moment, but it is too small to cross the shipping lanes to the IOW. Can I get something a little bigger with an engine that I can still carry in or on my car or trailer, and which I can self-launch from the beach without needing a ramp?

THERE WAS ALSO A CROSS PIECE THAT CLAMPED TO THE COCKPIT JUST BEHIND THE FRONT CREW MEMBER AND WAS WIDER THAN THE CANOE WITH A DAGGER BOARD ON EACH END THAT WENT INTO THE WATER TO STOP WATER GOING SIDEWAYS

I am looking to go away this weekend for a romantic camping trip. We want to be able to go kayaking and do some nice walks. A nearby pub with good food would be a bonus. Amenities for the girlfrined are a must. Any suggestions?

Check with the Information Bureau in your home town,who will be able to give you a list of Camp sites and other amenities together with sporting activities available in the various towns and villages, such as Newquay which is very popular for surfing etc. or check on the Net.

Is there a specific form or method of paddling a kayak?

I’m interested in kayaking, and am wondering if I should take some sort of class for it, or if I can just rent a kayak and hit the river.

If you’re talking about a whitewater kayak… The paddling will come naturally to you, that won’t be hard.. But staying upright won’t come naturally to you.. almost all beginners when they start to tip at all, will let go of their paddle, reach down into the water to try to brace on something, and flip upside down. (Don’t ask me why. It makes no sense, but EVERYONE does it.)
Try it yourself. You’ll see.
Anyway, it takes practice to use your paddle for bracing. and even more practice to learn to roll.

I’m an advocate of teaching yourself, but the kayak roll is one of the most counterintuitive things there is, so I recommend you take a lesson in a pool or lake. With good instruction, and a little practice, you will have your roll in no time, and then you can start running rivers.

If you really want to jump in the river today, I’d rent an inflatable kayak. they are much more stable, and bomber for running whitewater.. if you flip, you can just haul the boat back right-side-up, and climb in.

Traveling to Texas – Honeymoon Getaway and need suggestion on fun things to do!?

Okay first of all we will be getting married Nov 9. But never week (Friday) we are taking a road trip to Texas until the following Wednesday, which leaves us about 4-5 days to have fun before we need to come back to our every day lives.

I was looking for some suggestions on places to go, things to do, and entertainment…

What we do know we want to do is Six Flags, Horsebackriding, and the RiverWalk.

What we don’t want to do is: clubs/night life, bars, lounges, museums, or anything that doesn’t involve slight action.

What we do want to find/do is: Anime Conventions/Shops, hiking trails, canoe rentals, more roller coaster parks, more horse back trails, anything exotic or something you would not expect, hot spas (if they have?), and of course romantic things as well (rent a sailboat, pack deal type things or anything in general).

We are willing to do things in Texas, Louisana, Alabama and Florida, but try to focus on things outside of Florida (We live here).

A group of 8+ people are thinking of going to Missouri for a raft float trip or canoe trip, plus would like to stay in cabins for a night or two. I know there are a lot in Missouri but was looking for anyone that has gone to a specific one and was satisfied. Thanks!

There are certainly numerous places.
One that I like is located about 40 miles west of St. Louis close to I-44.

Meramac State Park.. Has nice rustic cabins. Easy access to the interstate. Close to the river.

I live about an hour north of the park.. Sitting here experiencing another ice storm. And a relaxing warm weather float trip does seem very appealing right now .

Kayaking Big Bend Dam, Lake Oroville, CA

35′ drop over Big Bend Dam on N. Fork of Feather River. The Big Bend run is a class III / IV run just below the Poe Powerhouse and Poe reach. The run is about 7 miles long when lake levels on Lake Oroville drop to 740 ft. Included in video clip is Box Car Rapid which should be scouted. Other class iv rapids appear at the end when the lake is about 705 feet (big holes on left, read and run from river right) and rumors of a class V rapid lurking even futher down and may have showed up when the lake was really low in Dec 2008. The box car is no longer sitting in the middle of the rapid but there is still train wreckage evident on river left. Flow in video is approx 1200 cfs but turbines can release up to 4000cfs and the waves get quite huge at higher flows so the run has a fun big water feel. The run is only uncovered in the fall during draught years and when the Oroville Reservoir is low (we start running it when the lake drops below 740ft). We hired a boat to tow us out of the lake (call Lake Oroville Marina) otherwise you face a long paddle out (4 to7 miles depending on lake level) to the boat ramp at Dark Canyon.
