How to work out for paddling in surfing?
How do I train my shoulders for the specific motion of paddling out and into waves? I know general shoulder exercises, however I can do them all winter and feel completely unprepared come spring. Without out paying for one of those machines, does anyone know advanced techniques?
Thanks
a good one is to go out on flat days and sit on your knees, keeping yourself balanced on the center of your board. then paddle with long strides going along the coast. your shoulders and triceps will kill

Swimming, rowing & general shoulder exercises would be best but anything that has a similar action to your actual sport.

If you’re happy to spend a little bit of money, you can buy a float that goes between your legs, called a pullbuoy and paddles that tie to your hands (See the links below).
Get in a pool, grip the float between your legs, put on the fin things and swim and swim and swim… It’s really good for isolating the muscles needed for paddling.
Also, the muscles involved in paddling are mainly your pectorals (chest). You might feel your shoulders aching more but that’s because they’re not used to it. Make sure you work your chest with bench presses and stuff too! And your back! Haha.

I want to tell you upfront this is an odd excersise, but I can tell you without a doubt it works great!!!! Stand in front of a wall. Place your hands at the base of the wall and kick up to a hand stand. Now that you are in a handstand, lower yourself down to where your head touches the ground, and push yourself up. It’s called a handstand push-up. It works every piece of your shoulder, and it builds that momentum you need for doing that repeat motion of paddling.
