Canoe Prep Tips

http://mdc4.mdc.mo.gov/tv/handyhints.asp
Floating a Missouri stream is one of my favorite ways to spend a day off. Sometimes I fish, sometimes I watch birds, sometimes I just relax and truly “go with the flow.” But the key to a great float is preparation. Figure out what you’re going to need, and be sure to take it along. First…know where you’re going! A lot of publications are available to help you…like Missouri Ozark waterways, a paddler’s guide to Missouri, and topographic maps. Next, there’s the canoe. Plastic ones often work best in our Ozark streams, since they are light and more easily slide over gravel and rocks. If you don’t own one, you’ll need to find a good canoe rental agency. Make sure your canoe has both bow and stern pull ropes. Now for the rest of your equipment. By law, you must have a personal flotation device aboard for each person in the boat. Life vests work best…but you need to wear them, and keep them fastened! Clip-on seats and cushions can make your trip more include a large sponge to remove water from the canoe…a dry bag or water proof bucket with lid for cameras, wallets, keys, first-aid kit…a trash bag to pack trash out…and a cooler for lunches and drinks or to store the fish you catch. Take steps to protect yourself: bring along sun screen, a hat, sunglasses, and wading shoes. And don’t forget rope to tie the cooler and waterproof bucket to your canoe.

Temagami 8 Day Canoe Trip – Part 2 of 2 (2009)

This is the footage taken from an eight day canoe trip I did with a friend of mine in the Temagami region in Ontario, Canada.
It was my first trek in Temagami and it proved to be a tough go but worth every effort. It’s worth noting that a good chunk of the trip wasn’t actually in a park at all, hence some difficult portages.
The route involved about 41 lakes and rivers and I have a full one hour trip log in the wings that I will likely be posting on a future date to help anyone who would like to do this same trip or sections of it.
To outline the loop we did, some of the bodies of water involved – starting with: Red Squirrel Lake, Eagle Lake, Sir Devon Lake, Lady Evelyn Lake, Sucker Gut Lake, Lady Evelyn River – South Channel, Diamond Lake, Sharp Rock Inlet and back to Red Squirrel Lake.

Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoy it…

Solo Canoe Trip 2009 (3 of 3)

This is part 3 of a 3 part video taken on a solo trip I did with my dog Maddy (aka The Goose) to the Algonquin region in Ontario Canada. We did a there-and-back starting at Wendigo Lake and moving South to Clam Shell Lake.
The weather was better than I could have hoped for with lakes of glass for almost the whole trip.
It was a nice relaxing trip and a great way to end the season.

Food for a 2 person, 8 day canoe trip

I was putting together some food for an eight day canoe trip in Algonquin Provincial Park and thought I might as well take ten minutes to put it on tape and toss it up on good ‘ol YouTube. Hopefully it will give some ideas for other canoe trippers or hikers out there as well as inspire some fellow trippers to fire some off their own favorite recipes for me to try out on the trail.
As I mention in this video, this is more food than required but makes for a comfortable trip. When I do solo tripping I tend to bring much less but when going with friends I’d rather be 100% positive we’ll have enough. I don’t mind being a little hungry if I packed on the light side for food but I don’t like others to suffer for having less food than they’re comfortable with.

Btw, due to the amount of gear and food and having a 16′ boat, my dog Maddy (aka The Goose) sat this trip out. She was sadly missed and will be joining me on future outings for certain.

Cheers,
Troy
